Above & Beyond Winner - Mandi

We are happy to announce Mandi as one of our Above & Beyond Award winners from the Fall 2026 All-Staff Meeting.  As a winner of this award, Mandi will receive a certificate and a gift card from Target.

Mandi was nominated by Gary.

Here's what Gary said in the nomination: "Mandi is the definition of a self-starter. She set the bar high just two months into her role by independently organizing and moderating a statewide panel on handling difficult patron interactions.

More recently, though, she has taken on several big behind-the-scenes projects with unmatched enthusiasm and efficiency. Over the summer, she braved the blazing heat to conduct on-site circulation interviews at small libraries across the campus. She audited 770 individual items on our media reserves shelf to ensure our inventory was accurate, and systematically examined course rosters for both Kelley and O'Neill so our research guides were fully updated for Fall. Mandi tackles even the most tedious tasks with a level of joy and grace that makes the hardest work look effortless, and we are so proud to present her with the Above and Beyond Award!"

Above & Beyond Winner - Landen

We're please to announce Landen as one of the Above & Beyond Award winners at the Fall 2026 All-Staff Meeting. As a winner, Landen will receive a certificate along with a Target gift card.

Landen was nominated by Matt & Joyce.

Here's what Matt said in the nomination: "Legend tells of a man who was born to be a Senior PSA. This was a man who always volunteered to assist with closing duties during his many late-night shifts as a regular PSA. And not just the fun stuff, either, like flashing the lights, or restarting the work stations. He also went down into the trenches and cleared out the hangers-on, the stragglers, the rabble rousers who tried to stay past closing time. But he did even this the way he does all things – with a ready smile. And that approach sums up this man well: a steady, helpful presence, always asking what he can do, kind to patrons and co-workers alike. For all that and more, he went on to win the Above and Beyond award. And that man’s name is Landen."

Mandatory All-Staff Meeting - September 11 at 5:00pm

 

The Fall Semester 2026 Mandatory All-Staff Meeting will be on Friday, September 11th at 5:00pm. This is a MANDATORY meeting for all library staff.

The meeting will start right after we close the library. It's a great time for the whole staff to get together. We usually have introductions, present the "Above & Beyond" awards, go over a few important things about the library, do a fun activity (with prizes) and eat pizza. Plus, you will be paid for your time. All in all a pretty sweet deal!

If you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions, please let us know.

If you have a conflict come up and won't be able to attend, you must speak with Matt or Jeri in person. 

Library Closed on Monday, September 7th for Labor Day Holiday

 

The Business/SPEA Library will be CLOSED on Monday, September 7th for the Labor Day Holiday.

Normal library hours will resume on Tuesday, September 8th at 8:00am

Reminder: The library will be open regular hours on Saturday, September 5th & Sunday, September 6th. If you are scheduled to work either of those days, you are responsible for working your shift or posting a sub notice. 

August/September Birthday Wednesday - September 2nd

 

Each month, on the first Wednesday of the month, we celebrate Birthday Wednesday! It's an opportunity to celebrate our colleagues who are celebrating a birthday that month. Plus, there will usually be doughnuts in the morning and cookies in the afternoon.

We're going to celebrate our colleagues with August and September birthdays on Wednesday, September 2nd. 

Please feel free to stop by the library on Birthday Wednesday for a sweet treat, even if you're not working that day. 

Please take a moment to wish those colleagues who celebrate birthdays during these months a very happy birthday.

IU Football Home Game Schedule - Possible impact for traffic, parking and extra people

 

The National Champion Indiana Hoosier Football Team starts the defense of their title in a few weeks. Since IU now has a successful football team and every home game is SOLD OUT, we can expect lots  more excitement surrounding the Hoosiers this year. All of this means that home football game days/weekends will see an huge increase in people & traffic around the stadium, campus & town. For those library staff members who work on game days, your arrival, departure, travel & parking may be affected. You may need to plan routes and/or allow extra time accordingly. Pack your patience & stay safe out there!

On home football game days, the Fee Lane garage will be used for football parking so the game day event fee will be charged to any one entering the garage. The payment will be required for all vehicles, including those displaying an IU parking permit. 

If you are tailgating and/or attending any games this season, enjoy yourself, cheer loudly & stay safe as well.

Important Library Things to know as the fall semester starts

 

Class or Work Schedule Changes -- Has your class schedule changed (added or dropped class) and you’ll need to adjust your work schedule for the remainder of the semester? For those issues/questions, please see Matt or send him an email.

Library Main Phone Number – The library phone number is 812-855-1957. Please add this number into the contacts on your phone, in the event we need to contact you or you need to contact us.

Running Late to Work -- If you are running late to work a shift, please call the library at 812-855-1957 to let the supervisors know. Please do not text or call any individual supervisor directly.

Unable to Work a Shift & Need Someone to Cover a Shift for You -- Starting this year, we are using the LibStaffer platform to handle all sub requests. If you are unable to work your assigned shift, please log into LibStaffer and post your shift as available as soon as possible. Everyone who works in this library receives email about open shifts, so we’ll know about potential holes in the schedule.

If you are willing and able to work a shift for fellow colleague, please log into LibStaffer and pick up that shift. Once you pick up a shift, you are responsible for either working the shift or posting it as available.

You can’t work more than 29 hours per week. If you have more than one IU job, they will all count toward the 29-hour rule.

You can’t work while you are scheduled to be in class.

Timesheet Issues -- If you forgot to clock in/out or need to have your timesheet fixed in some way, please see Jeri or send her an email.

Questions about Payroll -- Please reach out to either Jeri or Matt. They can help you figure it out.

Staff Directory -- Each semester, we put together a list of all library staff’s phone numbers & email addresses. This is an internal document for staff use only. We do suggest you put the phone number for the library along with the numbers of all full-time staff in your phone contacts. So if you need to call the library at any time you’ll already have the number and if the staff gives you a call or text for any reason, you’ll know it’s us and not a spam call.

Birthdays -- Celebrating birthdays is always fun, right? Here at Business/SPEA we celebrate staff birthdays on the first Wednesday of each month complete with treats and a sign listing who had/had a birthday that month. Be on the lookout for someone asking about your birthday for the official list.

Questions about the Library, Your Job or Most Anything -- Please feel free to reach out to any of the supervisors. Remember, there are no dumb questions. Think of it this way, you won’t know an answer unless you ask us. We’ll do our best to answer them or find someone who can help.
