Annie & Talie Are Caught in the Act Winners!

Waiting until our next mass meeting to announce this semester's Caught in the Act winners just doesn't seem right.  We want to recognize Talie and Annie for the fantastic service they give our guests right now!

Talie takes her time with our guests and makes sure they leave the desk with smiles on their faces. If they need extra help, she gives it.

Annie doesn't let our technology get her down and goes the extra mile to help our guests when they have problems.

BUSP is indeed fortunate to have Talie and Annie on its staff. We'll all give them a much-deserved round of applause at our Fall Mass Meeting. In the meantime, they will each receive a Target gift card as our show of appreciation.

Subs During Finals Week

Got a final that interferes with your work schedule?  Scheduled to work on Friday, but you're leaving Bloomington on Wednesday?  Please post your sub requests to the listserv as soon as you can to better your chances of finding someone to work for you.  Those of us still slaving away at BUSP (joyfully slaving away, of course) will greatly appreciate your sub being here.

Our Graduates, Part IV: Rachel

We are indeed fortunate to have had the opportunity to know and work with Rachel, who is graduating with a major in journalism.  She joined our staff two years ago at the beginning of fall semester, and very quickly learned the ins and outs of serving our guests at BUSP.  After her first semester she left us to study abroad, returning to BUSP the next fall.  She greatly enjoys the meaningful friendships she has formed with her co-workers.

After wearing her cap and gown, Rachel plans to spend a bit of time in her hometown of Huntington Beach, California.  Her next stop will be New York City, where she will work for a magazine or website.

Her advise to you?  Rachel says, "Work hard, be nice to people, and pick up sub shifts!"  Since Rachel is our Queen of Subbing, this is fitting advice from her.

She knows she will miss everyone like crazy.  Rachel, we're going to miss you like crazy too!  We wish you the very best in the Big Apple.  May all your dreams come true!

Cafe Hours

Just so you know, and so you can tell any guests that may ask: Our cafĂ© will close for the semester at 3:00 on Thursday of finals week.  It will reopen at 8:00 on May 13, the first day of summer sessions.

Our Graduates, Part III: Charles

Our congratulations go to Charles, who came to IU from Terre Haute.  He began his employment at BUSP as a freshman, and admits he considers the IC his second home in Bloomington.  His favorite thing about his four years on our staff is working with all of you. He also enjoys the opportunity to see his friends and classmates around the IC.

Charles plans to take the high road immediately after graduation and do a lot of eating, sleeping, and nothing-in-particular until he begins his career as a supply chain consultant at enVista in Carmel, IN.  He will be pushing to join enVista's recruiting team, so he can come back to IU to visit his sister and the rest of us.  After he gets a few years experience under his belt, he hopes to move to the east coast and join a larger consulting firm.

His advice for you?  Charles thinks it wise that you never stop learning.  He encourages you to check out books on subjects you like and actually read them.  He knows how difficult it can be balancing course work, extra-curricular activities, and a social life, but he firmly believes a good rule of thumb in the college years is to set aside a half hour at the end of the day to read any book you like. (Bedtime story, anyone?)  He's also very much aware of how quickly time flies, and advises you to not get into a set routine which will only make it go by faster.

Charles has asked us to wish him luck, but we're absolutely positive he really doesn't need it.  He's done his homework and he's got so much going for him that luck isn't necessary at all.  But we'll do it, just because he asked.  So here it is, Charles:  Good luck to you!  All our best wishes for a successful and happy life are following you out into the Big Wide World.

Birthday Boys & Girls

Be sure to stop by our break area on Wednesday (April 30) to pick up your cupcake.  This month, in addition to our April birthdays, we'll be celebrating those of us leaving BUSP for the summer who have birthdays in May and June:

  • Anna (April 14)
  • Ivona (April 27)
  • Zoe (May 5)
  • Angela (June 28)
  • Jelena (June 14)

Well, Goody!

The staff is preparing a goody bag for you as a very small token of our thanks for a wonderful year.  It has indeed been a pleasure working with each and every one of you.  YOU GUYS ARE FANTASTIC!

May the treats inside the bag be a bit of help to you during finals week.  You'll find your bag on our break tables next Tuesday.

This semester's Caught in the Act award winners will also be announced next week.

Our Graduates, Part II: Drew

Our heartful congratulations go to Drew, a graduating senior from Fort Wayne.  A biology major, Drew is currently interviewing for several different lab technician positions in Austin, Texas, where he would be working on soil-microbe ecology experiments at a research lab.

At BUSP, Drew thoroughly enjoyed hearing our guests say "thank you" after he assisted them or offered them one of our services.  He wants those he is leaving behind at BUSP to know that the time spent behind the desk at the IC is much more rewarding when you are actively involved in helping guests and co-workers with day-to-day tasks.

We have found working alongside Drew these past four years to be our reward.  BUSP has indeed been fortunate to have him on its staff.  Thank you, Drew!  May Life bring you the best it has to offer.

IMPORTANT: Fall Scheduling Reminder

I plan to begin working on fall semester schedules next Monday, April 28.  If you haven't given your scheduling request form to me yet, please do so as soon as possible.  You'll find the form on our break tables.  If you will not have registered for classes by next Monday, let me (treynold@indiana.edu) know that.

Our Graduates, Part I: Angela

Angela, who calls Westfield, IN her hometown, came to the BUSP staff as a sophomore.  She quickly established a place for herself here, and was one of our earliest Caught in the Act award recipients.  Her favorite part of working at BUSP is the staff. (That's you!) When asked to give advice to those she'll be leaving behind, Angela mentioned cherishing every moment and seeking every opportunity. She is certain your time here will go by so fast.  She will be graduating with a major in marketing and a minor in Spanish.  Her future holds a career in sales.  She has definitely sold us!

Angela, you will be greatly missed.  May your future hold all things bright.

Kayla Chosen IU Student Employee of the Year!

Kayla receives her award from Andrea White, Asst. Director of CDC

What a pleasure it is to announce that Kayla has been named Indiana University (Bloomington Campus) Student Employee of the Year.  She was one of two students chosen from over 100 nominees to receive this designation by the IU Career Development Center. Today she was honored at an awards brunch held at the University Club Faculty Room in the IMU.

In her current position as Senior PSA, Kayla's leadership and problem-solving skills, her knowledge of BUSP's policies, procedures and services, her reliability and responsibility put her at the top. She is most deserving of this campus award, and BUSP is indeed fortunate to have her on its staff.

Way to go, Kayla!  We're so proud of you!

Student Employment Awareness Week

This is National Student Employment Week, an occasion that is noted by universities all across the country.  The purpose of the event is to recognize the contribution student employees make to the university. It is the appropriate time for us to say THANKS to each of you for giving your time and attention to BUSP and its guests.  What would we do without you?  (I shudder to think of that!)

This year we especially recognize Erin for her reliability, the exceptional quality of her work, her initiative, and her professionalism.  THANK YOU, ERIN!

Watch for an exciting announcement coming soon regarding another one of your co-workers!

I-Core & Room Reservations

Prepare yourself!  I-Core will be upon us next week.  This means every chair in BUSP will be filled, the noise level will rise, and we'll all definitely be earning our pay.

Beginning next Monday and until the semester ends, we will no longer be taking reservations for rooms 154-160.  All of our rooms will be checked out on a first-come, first-served basis so that we can accommodate as many people as possible.

Fall Semester Scheduling Date Change

It has come to my attention that not all of you will be registered for classes by April 21.  For this reason, I won't begin scheduling for fall semester until April 28.  Do remember to get your scheduling request form to me as soon as you have registered for classes.  The forms are available on our break tables.

May you receive the class and work schedules of your dreams!

Christina Returns

Remember this face?  Christina has spent the past few months getting Baby Ruby's life off to a healthy and happy start.  This goal accomplished, she is now ready to return to BUSP.  Beginning next Monday, Our Fearless Leader will be working among us once again.

Welcome back, Christina!

Fall Semester Scheduling

Looking forward to another fine year at BUSP?  Unless you're graduating, I hope so!  As soon as you've registered for fall semester classes, please fill out a Fall Semester Scheduling Request form.  You'll find a stack of them on our break tables across from our refrigerator.  Once you've filled out the form, give it to me or stash it in my mailbox.  I intend to begin putting the schedule together on April 21, so have your form to me by then.

Have questions or concerns about fall scheduling?  Just let me know.

I'm looking forward to another fine year working with you!    --Terry

Unsung Heroes

Annie, subbed 14 times
We don't have a prize for the category Those Subbing the Most, but if we did, Annie and Suzy would be our current Spring Semester 2014 winners.  Thanks so much, Annie and Suzy, for helping out your co-workers in need and for the time and attention you give to BUSP.
Suzy, subbed 12 times

We also don't have a prize for the category Most Entertaining Sub Notice, but if we did, that prize would most definitely go to Tyler C.  Thanks Tyler, for making our reading of the sub notices fun!

Leaving Us?

Will you be graduating at the end of this semester or not returning to BUSP in the fall for another reason?  If so, please let me (treynold@indiana.edu) know. And soon. You're going to be missed, and we need time to adjust to losing you!
