Graduating Student Spotlight - Hunter Minser

As the end of the semester approaches, we’d like to take the opportunity to highlight our graduating student employees. This fall, Hunter Minser is our lone graduating student employee.

This is a bittersweet moment for us as we will miss him terribly, but we wish him much success in the future. His contributions to our library during his time here have been invaluable to the success of our library and appreciated more than he knows.

So with all of that being said, we think you should hear from Hunter in his own words. We’ve asked him to answer a few questions about his time here at the Business/SPEA Library.

Where are you from?
I am from Fort Wayne, IN

How long have you worked at the Business/SPEA Library?
I have worked at the Business/SPEA Library since my sophomore year in 2020.

What is your position here at the library?
I worked as a PSA at the front desk until becoming a master's student and then moved over to working the reference desk.

What did you enjoy about working at the library?
I enjoyed all of the people at the library the most. Working over the years and meeting different people and spending my shifts with them was probably my favorite part. I also enjoyed getting to see a bit more of behind the scenes on how a library operated which did inspire me to get my master's in library science.

Do you have a favorite memory of the library, Indiana University or Bloomington you’d like to share?
My favorite memory of Indiana University actually comes from my freshman year. I had a bunch of friends from high school who went to Purdue. That year, the IU/Purdue football game was at Purdue, so some friends and I went to Purdue and stayed with our friends. As a big group we all went to the game and just being there as an IU fan and all the heckling and everything was so much fun. IU ended up winning the game in overtime which just made it that much sweeter.

What’s your degree & major?
I got my bachelor's degree in History and am now graduating with my master's degree in Library Science.

What are your plans after leaving IU?
I plan on moving back to Fort Wayne after I graduate to be back around my family. I have applied to work for the local public library system as well as the local ambulance service so we will see what ends up happening in that regard.

Any farewell thoughts that you’d like to share?
I wish everyone a great college experience. Know that I will miss everyone here that I have become friends with over the years. It has truly been a great time working here at the Business/SPEA Library.

Thank you, Hunter for being a part of the Business/SPEA Library team. Congratulations & Best Wishes in the future!

Important End of Semester Reminders for Library Staff

1. As we approach the end of the semester, it’s a good idea to remind everyone the fall semester goes until Friday, December 20th at 5:00pm. You are expected to work your shifts or find a sub during that time.

2. Final Exams - It’s also a good idea to double-check your final exam schedule since final exams don’t always happen during your regularly scheduled class time. Make sure you’re not going to have a conflict between your final exam and your work schedule. If so, please put a sub notice up as soon as possible.

3. Extra Hours - If you want to pick up some extra hours, earn some extra money and have the availability from now through finals week, please keep your eyes on the subs list and help us out when you are able. We will really appreciate it.

4. If you are returning from break early (before January 13th) and are interested in some extra hours, reach out to us and see about availability from January 2nd-12th. The library is open Monday-Friday from 8am to 5pm during that time.

5. Spring Semester 2025 starts on January 13th. So, that means regular library hours and your spring semester work schedule start that day.

6. Questions – If you have any questions, please reach out to a supervisor.

Lastly, as part of Kelley Balance Week, there will be service dogs in training visiting the library on Tuesday December 9th from 10am to Noon and Wednesday December 10th from 1pm to 3pm. Stop by, if you need to destress by petting a dog.

Here’s to a great end of the semester! Good Luck on your Final Exams & Projects!

Library Staff Activity - Trick or Treat Bags

It's Spooky Season! Since everyone loves candy, but we generally don’t “Trick or Treat” as adults, we’re going to have a fun staff activity where you have the opportunity to make a Trick or Treat bag for Halloween.

Participation in this activity is strictly voluntary.

From October 14 to October 27, each person may decorate a trick or treat bag for Halloween. Supplies to decorate bags can be found on the table in the back office. You are encouraged to decorate bags during a work shift, so get one of us to help cover the desk for you. Please be creative in your decorating, but vulgarity is discouraged. Once bags are decorated, they will be places along the back table.

From October 28 to October 31, anyone who chooses to, may put some little candy or treats inside the bags. IF you choose to participate in this part, please bring enough items for everyone’s bag. There are 30 people working at the library. Please be aware we have an employee who is allergic to nuts and at least one employee who is vegetarian. Please be conscious of this when bringing in items. The overall goal is fun, enjoyment & seeing how creative we all can be.

After October 31, you may take your bag home with you.

For any extra candy that might be left, since some may choose to not make a bag, we’ll put that in a bowl on the back table for everyone to help themselves.

Happy Halloween!

Above & Beyond Award Winner - Lily Dunn

We're very happy to announce Lily Dunn as a winner of the Business/SPEA Library Above & Beyond Award for the Fall 2024 semester. As a winner, Lily is the recipient of a Target gift card.

Lily was nominated by Jeri Anderson

Here's what Jeri had to say about Lily: "In June, we had an incoming freshman student & her Mom come into the library looking for help. They had driven to Bloomington from Anderson in search of in-person help. While we were trying to help them, Lily came in for her work shift and immediately jumped in to offer up help & ideas. We figured out they needed to visit the First Year Experience office, located in Willkie Quad. Lily offered to walk them to the FYE offices at Willkie Quad so they would be sure to get to the right building. During the walk with them, Lily was able to answer other questions they had about IU & campus and offer up information from the perspective of a fellow student. Upon arrival at Willkie Quad, even though there didn’t seem to be anyone within sight, Lily took it upon herself to find someone to help them, explaining the situation and actually handing them over to that person. The Mom was so impressed with the level of service that they came back to report how the issues were resolved & got pictures with her, her daughter, Lily, Gary, & I."
"A long time ago, I read where a person who has a bad customer service experience will tell something like 10 of their friends who in turn will tell 10 more. For this reason, it’s my pleasure to nominate Lily for an “Above & Beyond” award for her willingness to go above & beyond with these visitors to our campus…her willingness to walk them to where they needed to go & her initiative in finding an actual person inside of Willkie to help them. With her exceptional customer service attitude & actions, she turned what could have been a negative, frustrating experience into a very positive experience. Thank you Lily for helping to make sure this family had a great experience."

Congratulations Lily!
THANK YOU for going Above & Beyond!

Above & Beyond Award Winner - Elizabeth Shepherd

We're very happy to announce Elizabeth Shepherd as a winner of the Business/SPEA Library Above & Beyond Award for the Fall 2024 semester. As a winner, Elizabeth is the recipient of a Target gift card.

Elizabeth was nominated for this award by Lily Dunn.

Here's what Lily had to say about Elizabeth: "Elizabeth has always been reliable in terms of picking up other people's shifts as well as showing up to her own despite her busy schedule being a nursing student.  When she works you can see a dedication and drive that is hard to replicate in a simple job like ours, as well as her determination to doing her job at the library while also trying to pass practical exams and figure out how clinicals work.  She's a fun person to work with even if you've never met her, and she makes the library a welcoming place whenever she's here."

Congratulations Elizabeth!
THANK YOU for going Above & Beyond!!

Birthday Wednesday coming up on October 2nd

Just a friendly reminder that we'll be celebrating October Birthday Wednesday next week on Wednesday, October 2nd. Stop by for some sweet treats (maybe baked by Gary) in the morning and some cookies in the afternoon.

Some Important Things to Know

Schedule Changes -- Has your class schedule changed (added/dropped a class) and you need to adjust your work schedule for the remainder of the semester? For those issues/questions, please see Matt or send him an email.

Timesheet Issues -- If you forget to clock in/out, do a missed punch or need to have your timesheet fixed in some way, please see Jeri or send her an email.

Running Late to Work -- If you are running late to arrive at work, please call the library at 812-855-1957 to let the supervisors know. Please do not text any individual supervisor.

Unable to work a shift & need of someone to cover a shift for you -- We use a email listserv for posting of sub notices, so that all staff, including supervisors, will see it and know about potential holes in the schedule. You will be added to the list, by a supervisor and receive an email. The list address is busp-subs-l@list.iu.edu  Please don't use any list address with the word "request" in it.

When requesting a sub, please include in the email the date & time of the shift you need covered.

If you are able & willing to pick up a shift for a co-worker, simply reply to their email indicating you can work for them. If you discover later on that you are unable to work, you will need to put up sub request.

Staff Directory - We put together a staff directory containing library staff's phone numbers & email addresses. This is an internal document for staff use only. We do suggest that you put the library's phone number along with the full-time staff phone numbers in your contacts, so if you miss a shift and we give you call or text, you'll know it's us and not spam.

Birthdays - Who doesn't love celebrating another trip around the sun? We here at Business/SPEA celebrate birthdays on the first Wednesday of each month with treats and a sign listing who has/had a birthday that month. Be on the lookout for someone asking about your birthday for the official list.

Questions about the library, your job or most anything else -- Please ask any of the supervisors. There are no dumb questions. Look at it this way, you won't have an answer until you ask us. We'll do our best to answer your questions and/or find someone who can help.

Welcome or Welcome Back to the Business/SPEA Library

Welcome or Welcome Back to the Business/SPEA Library! If you're a returning employee, we hope you had a great summer and are excited for a new semester to start. If you're a new employee, welcome to the library staff & we're glad to have you join us. We hope you had a great summer and are excited for a new semester to start as well. We really hope you'll enjoy being a part of our library team.

The Business/SPEA Library is the library that supports both the Kelley School of Business and the O'Neill School of Public & Environmental Affairs (SPEA). Organizationally speaking, our library is part of the IU Libraries. Physically speaking, our library is located in the SPEA building. We are a non-traditional library space, meaning the library is designed for collaborative work and tends to get very loud. At times, it will sound less like a normal library and more like a school cafeteria at lunch time. We are the second busiest library in the IU Libraries system.  We serve two of the largest schools (enrollment wise) on campus with our small, but mighty staff.  We prioritize teamwork & great customer service.

The purpose of this blog is to share information to all library staff without having to clutter your inbox with extra emails. One of your job expectations is to check this blog during each of your shifts. You will find it bookmarked on the computers at the service desk.

If you every have any questions about the blog or any of the information posted on it, please ask a supervisor.

We're looking forward to a fantastic semester!!
