Important Information for Library Staff about Thanksgiving Break 2025

With Thanksgiving Break approaching in a few weeks. Here’s some important information for you to know & remember.

Before Break: You are responsible for working your shifts or finding a sub through Friday, November 21st at 5:00pm

During Break: The library will be CLOSED from Saturday, November 22nd through Saturday, November 29th

At the End of Break: The library does reopen on Sunday, November 30th from 5:00pm to Midnight. Since we don’t want poor Matt working all by himself, it would be awesome if you could show up to work or find a sub during that time. If anyone would like a few extra hours, we would love it if you could help us out during that time.

After Break: Starting on Monday, December 2nd, it’s back to regular hours and business as usual.

Our wish for each of you this Thanksgiving break is safe travels, lots of great food and wonderful memories with family & friends.

We’re THANKFUL to have you as part of our library family.

Birthday Wednesday -- November 5th

Birthday Wednesday is coming up on Wednesday, November 5th. It's a long-standing tradition here in the library where we celebrate our colleagues who are celebrating birthdays during the month of November. Naturally, we also love any reason to eat treats, such as doughnuts or cookies. Seriously though, does one really have to have a reason to eat sweet treats?

Please stop by the library during the day for doughnuts in the morning & cookies in the afternoon.

Daylight Saving Time Ends on November 2nd

Just a quick reminder Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. This is the time where we "Fall Back". Remember to set any manual clocks, such as the microwave, stove, car, alarm clock back by one hour on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Most folks won't be affected by this as your electronic devices should change automatically.

This Weekend -- Friday Finish at Wells Library, Homecoming Parade, IU Basketball & IU Football

While this isn't necessarily a post about our library, I think it's a good idea to update you on what looks to be a big weekend around IU & Bloomington.

Friday Finish at Wells Library -- The last "Friday Finish" will take place on October 17th at the Wells Library from 10am to 4pm. Stop by to get some donuts early on or get some pizza later. The IU Mascot "Hoosier the Bison" will be there around noon handing out pizza and taking pictures with IU fans. For more information check out the link here: https://events.iu.edu/libraries/event/2019680-the-friday-finish

Homecoming Parade -- The IU Homecoming Parade is on Friday, October 17th. The parade starts in the area of 17th & Woodlawn at 5:15pm. The parade route will be down Woodlawn to 7th street. After the parade, there will be a carnival in Dunn Meadow. Be aware that traffic & bus routes/patterns will likely be affected by the parade.

IU Basketball -- The IU Basketball team has it's first exhibition game on Friday, October 17th at 7:30pm in Assembly Hall.

IU Football Game -- The Hoosiers will take on Michigan State on Saturday, October 18th at 3:30pm.

Expect more people & traffic around town this weekend.

Have a great time & stay safe.

Trick or Treat Bags -- Library Staff Activity for Halloween

Since everyone loves candy, but we don’t necessarily “Trick or Treat” as adults, we’re going to have a fun staff activity involving creating Halloween Trick or Treat bags.

Participation in this activity is strictly voluntary.

Between October 15 and October 27, each person may decorate a trick or treat bag for Halloween. Supplies to decorate bags can be found on the table in the back office. You are encouraged to decorate bags during a work shift, so get one of us to help cover the desk for you. Please be creative in your decorating, but vulgarity is discouraged. Once bags are decorated, they will be places along the back table.

Between October 28 & October 31, anyone who wishes to may put some candy or treats inside the bags. IF you choose to participate in this part, please bring enough items for everyone’s bag. There are 30 people working at the library. Please be aware we have an employee who is allergic to nuts and at least one employee who is vegetarian. Please be conscious of these facts when bringing in items. The overall goal is fun, creativity & enjoyment.

Starting October 31, you may take your bag with you. Make sure your bag is taken before leaving for Thanksgiving Break.

Since not everyone may make a bag, any extra candy will be put in a bowl, so everyone can help themselves.

Happy Halloween!
