Graduating Student Spotlight - Carly P.

As the end of this semester approaches, we'd like to take the opportunity to highlight our graduating students. This is a bittersweet moment for us as we will miss them terribly, but we also wish them much success in the future. Their contributions to our library during their time here have been invaluable to the success of our library and are appreciated more than they know.

So, we thought it would be awesome for them to share a few words about themselves & their time here at the Business/SPEA Library.

=====================================

Where are you from? -- I am from Dayton, Ohio.

How long have you worked at the Business/SPEA Library? -- I have worked at the Business/SPEA library for two years. I started in January 2024.

What is your position here at the library? -- I am a reference assistant at the reference desk.

What did you enjoy about working at the Business/SPEA Library? -- I enjoyed the community with my co-workers and supervisors and all the little treats during the holidays.

Do you have a favorite memory of the library or Indiana University or Bloomington you'd like to share? (You may answer for all three if you wish) -- My favorite memory has to be showing off the new pictures of my cat Mimi I take to Matt every week.

What is your degree & major? -- My degree is for a Masters in Library Science with a specialization in Archives and Records Management.

What are your plans after leaving IU? -- After IU, I will be starting a job as a content management librarian at Saint Francis University in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Do you have any farewell thoughts that you'd like to share with your library colleagues? -- I’ll miss you all and the activities that we did. Have a good time and stay strong during the busy shifts.

====================================

Thank you Carly for being a part of the Business/SPEA Library team. Congratulations & Best Wishes in the future!

Graduating Student Spotlight - Kathryn B.

=========================================

Where are you from? -- Lafayette, IN

How long have you worked at the Business/SPEA Library? -- Since January 2024.

What is your position here at the library? -- I work as one of the reference desk assistants.

What did you enjoy about working at the library? -- I enjoy being able to help people figure things out. I came from education, so I’m used to explaining things and guiding people towards the tools they can use for learning. Not to mention I got to learn a lot about different specialized subjects through some of the research I did on desk.

Do you have a favorite memory of the library or Indiana University or Bloomington you’d like to share? (You may answer for all three if you wish) -- Chat responses tend to be interesting, especially since not everyone realizes there’s a human on the other end. I’ve had one person ask if I was a robot or a real person over LibChat. When I told them I was an actual person, they apologized and said they’d have phrased their question nicer if they knew I was human.

Also it’s cool that we did become a football school. That certainly wasn’t a thing when I was in undergrad.

What is your degree & major? -- I am getting my master’s in Library Science with a focus on Archives and Records Management.

What are your plans after leaving IU? -- As of writing this, I am still hunting for a library position somewhere.

Any farewell thoughts that you’d like to share with your library colleagues? -- It has been a pleasure working with all of you and making memories over the things we witnessed. Thank you for putting up with my weirdness.

Thank you Kathryn for being a part of the Business/SPEA Library team. Congratulations & Best Wishes in the future!

Important End of the Fall Semester Reminders for All Library Staff

Here are a few important items to know & remember for the end of the semester.

1. Library Calendar: As we approach the end of the semester, it’s a good idea to remind everyone the fall semester goes until Friday, December 19th at 5:00pm. You are expected to work your shifts or find a sub during that time.

2. Final Exam Schedule: It’s also a good idea to double-check your final exam schedule since final exams don’t always happen during your regularly scheduled class time. Make sure you’re not going to have a conflict between your final exam and your work schedule. If so, please put a sub notice up as soon as possible.

3. Looking for Extra Hours: If you want to pick up some extra hours, earn some extra money and have the availability from now through finals week, please keep your eyes on the subs list and help us out when you are able. We will really appreciate it.

4. Spring Scheduling: Please make sure to give Matt your spring schedule & availability for next semester’s scheduling.

5. Returning Early?  If you are returning from break early (before January 12th) and are interested in some extra hours, reach out to us and see about availability from January 5th-9th. The library is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 4pm during that time.

6. Spring Semester 2026 starts on January 12th. So, that means regular library hours and your spring semester work schedule start that day.

7. Personal Belongings Left in the Library: Please take any charging cords & personal belongings that have been left at the service desk or office area with you. Items found are likely to be considered abandoned & will be cleaned up by staff.

8. On a Fun Note: As part of Kelley's Paw-Therapy “Love on a Leash” will be here with therapy dogs in the library on December 8th from 12:30pm-2:30pm. In addition, there should be service dogs in training in the library during Balance Week, although exact date & time information isn’t available yet.

Thank you for being part of the library team and for all you’ve done this semester.
Here’s to a fantastic finish to the semester!!!

December Birthday Wednesday -- December 3rd

Birthday Wednesday is coming up on Wednesday, December 3rd. It's a long-standing tradition here in the library where we celebrate our colleagues who are celebrating birthdays during the month of December. Even if we've just ate lots of food over the Thanksgiving holiday, we still love any reason to eat treats, such as doughnuts or cookies. Seriously though, is there ever a bad time to eat sweet treats?

Please stop by the library during the day for doughnuts in the morning & cookies in the afternoon.
