Your Money

Curious about when your money will magically appear in your bank account?  I've placed little blue cards in the in-box on our break room tables that will give you that information.  Take one, please.

Express Yourself!

Have you noticed the white board near the fridge in our break area?  This is OUR space to express ourselves.  Have you overheard something amusing or witty spoken in the IC?  Record it here for all to enjoy.  Just keep your words clean, OK?

Cheerio, Mates!

I will be visiting Merry ol' England Sept. 1-10.  Should you need help with anything during that time, please speak to Jeri (jesander@indiana.edu) or Matt (mtmcgee@indiana.edu). If you need to call the IC during my absence (or any other time, for that matter), you can use the 812-855-1957 number.  Use the listserv to request subs and accept shifts, as you usually do.  I hope to have good stories to tell you when I return!

Jelena Caught in the Act

Jelena is our second Caught in the Act staff member this semester.  She was caught taking a new hire under her wing, making the new staff member feel more comfortable with her new job.  It takes us working closely as a team to provide our guests with the best we have to offer.  Thanks, Jelena, for taking the lead. Your effort and caring attitude is greatly appreciated.

Ivona Caught in the Act

Ivona is our first staff member to be Caught in the Act this semester.  Because of a schedule gap, she was alone at the desk, but that didn't stop her from greeting each guest with a smile in a timely manner.  When she wasn't helping guests, she busied herself by refilling the paper levels in our printers and putting books in order on our routing shelves.  Thanks, Ivona, for your dedication to our guests' needs.  Your conscientiousness is greatly appreciated.

For those of you new to the staff, please know that being Caught in the Act is a good thing at the Business/SPEA IC!  It's all about providing good public service.  At the end of each semester, one student staff member Caught in the Act of providing outstanding service to our guests is awarded a Target gift certificate.  This is the full-time staff's way of  expressing our special thanks for a job well done.

Policy Reminders

Just a couple of desk etiquette/policy reminders...

1)  We know you haven't seen some of your friends for an entire summer, but please remember that they cannot linger in conversation with you at the desk while you are working.  Why?  Because guests needing your help may not approach the desk when they see someone else occupying your attention.

2)  Cell phones and other personal devices are not allowed at the desk.  Why?  Because if you're looking down into your phone, tablet, etc., you may miss that guest that needs your attention.  Some of them are timid, especially at this time of year, and it may very well take eye contact with you and your pretty smile to bring them to the desk.

Our purpose here, after all, is to take good care of our guests.  We need to be prepared to give them our full attention.  Have questions or concerns about these policies?  By all means, let me hear from you.

Staff Pictures

Get your best smile ready, as I will be taking pictures for our staff directory this week.  If you are new to the BUSP staff, I will most definitely be wanting a picture of you.  If you are a returning employee and would like to have your picture re-taken, please drop me a line (treynold@indiana.edu) and let me know.

Welcome Jessica!

We are very happy to welcome Jessica Huffman to our full-time staff.  Jessica will be filling the role of Assistant Librarian at BUSP.  She comes to us with experience under her belt from the libraries at Penn State University.  She'll be providing reference service for us and helping with instruction.  When you see her, feel free to introduce yourself and give her a warm Business/SPEA IC welcome. We are so fortunate to have her among us!

Helping the Lost

Got someone in front of you looking really worried because they can't find room 167?  Or a color printer?  Or worse...the restroom?  Put a smile on that frazzled face by getting them where they need to be.  Not sure how to get there yourself?  Take a look inside the red notebook (usually found on the shelf under our telephone or on the service counter near our phone).  Jeri has spent a good deal of time working on the Where is ??? section of that notebook.  Chances are, you'll be able to give good directions to the person in front of you once you've consulted it.  If you don't see what the guest is looking for in the notebook, by all means, check with your supervisor.

Welcome Back or Welcome for the Very First Time!

Thanks to Friday's Job Fair, our student staff is complete.  Since some people are new and some of us may be a bit rusty after the summer break, here are some important things to remember:

**Let me (Terry, treynold@indiana.edu)  know if you cannot clock in, so I can manually add your hours.  You do good work; it's important that we pay you for it!

**Remember the 29-hour rule: No I.U. student employee may work for I.U. more than 29 hours per week.  If you have multiple campus jobs, the total of all of them together cannot equal more than 29 hours.  Please see me if you have any questions about this.

**Clocking in/out on any device other than a  BUSP workstation will land you in big trouble.  I've been told I will need to let go people who clock in on their cell phones, etc.  We're attached to you and do not want to tell you good-by, so please use the service desk workstations to record your time.

**I'll be taking pictures of new people this week for our photo directory.  Wear your brightest smile.  If you are returning to the staff and want a new picture for the directory, please let me know.

**Our All-Staff Meeting has been set for September 18 (Fri.) from 6:00-7:30.  Mark your calendar now, if you haven't already.  If you can't attend this meeting because of another job, etc., you must let me know by the end of the first week of classes.

**Any questions or concerns?  Check with me or your supervisor on duty.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again...We're going to have a great year.  I can feel it!
