This is a bittersweet moment for us as we will miss them terribly, but we wish them much success in the future. Their contributions to our library during their time here have been invaluable to the success of our library and appreciated more than they know.

We thought it would be awesome for them to share a few words about their time here at the Business/SPEA Library.

Where are you from?  I am from Michigan City, Indiana. Right on the coast of Lake Michigan!

How long have you worked at the Business/SPEA Library?  I’ve worked at the library for 3 years. I started in the Spring of 2021.

What is your position? Senior Public Services Assistant

What did you enjoy about working at our library?  My favorite part of working at SPEA library all these years is that it is an incredibly supportive environment. Our bosses genuinely care for us as employees, as students, and as young adults figuring out how to exist in the world. It is a place filled with understanding and support, and there's always resources available to you, or at least people who are happy to help you find your starting point. I have enjoyed working with SPEA and its staff so much that I am considering working with public libraries when I move in the future!

Do you have a favorite library, IU or Bloomington memory?  College has been a wild roller coaster of experiences and emotions. I don't have one, specific event I can point to as being my "favorite memory" because I have so many memories I cherish. I have found the love of my life, made lifelong friendships, and discovered my passions while being surrounded by likeminded people, driven to build a life for themselves. It was hard, it was messy, it was beautiful, it was profound, it was the start of the rest of my life! I think IU was a lovely place to spread my wings and become the person I always wanted to be.

What’s your degree & major?  I have two degrees and two majors, one BA in Theatre and Drama, and a BA in Art History. My theatre degree is focused on backstage technical direction and theatrical equipment. My Art History degree is a broad spectrum.

What are your plans after leaving IU?  After leaving IU, I plan to move to Michigan and pursue a career in either museum management or theatre management.

Thank you, Caitie for being a part of the Business/SPEA Library team. Congratulations & Best Wishes in the future!

I was born in Bloomington, IN but lived an equal amount of time in Greene County (Solsberry, IN) and Columbus, IN so I never know how to answer this question.

How long have you worked at the Business/SPEA Library?  Almost 2 years, I started at the library August 2022, and I have worked every semester (including summers) since then.

What is your position in the library?  Senior Public Services Assistant

What did you enjoy about working at our library?  I enjoyed everything about working at the Business/SPEA library. It is a great community of people to work with. I enjoy acting as a (small) junction between students and pursuing higher education. I have had amazing conversations with nearly everyone that I have worked with.

Do you have a favorite library, IU or Bloomington memory?  Learning about the lore of different professors, and the semester meetings where we get to all come together.

What’s your degree & major?  I am getting a bachelor of arts in Cognitive Science and Linguistics with a minor in Psychology. Also a Certificate in Neuroscience.

What are your plans after leaving IU?
Short term: Work in a research lab gaining experience. Work on manuscript publication(s).
Intermediate term: Start (and finish) a PhD  in a field related to the intersection between the mind and language.
Long term: Work a career in academia (or industry) revolving around exploring and treating language disorders.

Any farewell thoughts to share?  Working as a PSA at the Business/SPEA library, I believe it's important to recognize the profound impact it has on our personal and professional growth. As PSAs, we serve as bridges between students and the wealth of resources within the library. This role demands dynamic problem-solving, effective interpersonal communication, navigation assistance, and support in database exploration. Through these responsibilities, we enhance our abilities in communicating effectively, problem-solving, and perhaps even spatial orientation. These are indispensable skills that equip us, and others, for a world increasingly reliant on strong communication and information literacy.

Moreover, beyond skill development, the interactions with my coworkers has been profound. Our team comprises of diverse undergraduate and graduate students, each bringing unique backgrounds and experiences. Engaging with them, learning from their stories, and building connections has nurtured my empathy and understanding. In closing, I extend gratitude to the library for fostering an environment that cultivates practical skills and meaningful connections during this transformative phase of our lives. I firmly believe that if more workplaces emulated the ethos of the Business/SPEA library, the world would be a better place.

Thank you, Kent for being a part of the Business/SPEA Library team. Congratulations & Best Wishes in the future!

What’s your degree & major?  I am getting a Bachelor of Science in Business and my major is Information Systems and Sustainable Business

What are your plans after leaving IU?  I am moving back to Denver, Colorado and I am working full time at RSM as a Technology Risk Consultant

Celebrate birthday Wednesday today

In the time-honored tradition of celebrating birthdays, today is April Birthday Wednesday! Stop by the library in the morning for some sweet treats (aka doughnuts) and/or stop by later this afternoon for more treats.

Most importantly, please wish Chuks a Happy Birthday (April 10)! 🎂🥳🎉

Important Reminder: Use the correct email address when posting sub notices

It seems there's some confusion about which email address to use when posting sub notices. Please make sure you are sending your sub requests to this address: busp-subs-l@list.indiana.edu

Add it into you contact list if you need to.

Please DO NOT use the list address with the word "request" in it. That's an administrative address and only comes to the owner of the list and not to your colleagues. We always try to forward those emails on, but it's not guaranteed we will always see them in time.

Rule of thumb when placing a sub notice: If you don't receive a copy of your request, then double check to make sure you've used the correct address.

April Birthday Wednesday - April 3rd

Birthday Wednesday is tomorrow April 3rd.. This time honored tradition is a chance to celebrate our library colleagues who are celebrating birthdays during this month. Of course, we also do it for the treats. 😉

Be sure to stop by the library in the morning to grab a doughnut and/or stop by later in the afternoon for some cookies.

Celebrating an April birthday is:  Chuks Ekeocha    April 10

If you see Chuks, be sure to wish him a very Happy Birthday!

Library Closed on Eclipse Day (April 8th)

The Business/SPEA Library will be CLOSED on Monday, April 8th for the solar eclipse.

As a reminder, the library will be open with business as usual on the Friday, Saturday & Sunday before the eclipse.

The library will resume normal operations on Tuesday, April 9th.

Be aware there may be a lot more people & traffic around campus and the city of Bloomington. Drive carefully, plan ahead and just be more aware. Stay safe and have a great eclipse day.

Room Key Reminder for All

As we approach the final weeks of the semester & I-Core, everyone will be even more stressed than normal. Please be careful when checking out room keys to make sure you're checking out the right key to the right person. There are a lot of people with the same or similar first names or last names, so it can by easy to look at the wrong name. It's also easy to mistake key 164 for key 184 when quickly grabbing a key. This is a good reminder for all of us, supervisors included, to be extra aware this time of the year.

Please remember that if you need help asking groups to leave a room or if someone is being a less than ideal patron, please get a supervisor to help you out. We support you and have your back

Eclipse Glasses - Available to all IU Library Employees

The IU Libraries is providing one pair of eclipse glasses to each IU Library employee (full time & part time). Please see Jeri to pick up your pair. There are also some envelopes that can be used to transport the glasses.

If you need additional glasses for family or friends, the Lilly Library will have eclipse glasses available to all visitors from now through the eclipse, or until supplies run out. From March 30 – April 5, the Wells & Sciences Libraries will have eclipse glasses available in limited quantities. Otherwise, you should be able to find glasses around town, at least while supplies last.

Update to the Phone Saga

As you are aware, we've been having issues with being able to hear the circulation desk phone ring when the library is busy. Having the circulation desk & reference desk phone ring at the same time hasn't proven to be a viable long term option. This morning, we changed the actual phone devices as we were thinking that one phone rang a little louder than the other one. We also turned of the ringing on both phones. So, be sure to listen closely for the circulation desk phone to ring, especially if you are the one sitting in the chair closest to it. We'll monitor this and see if it works and take it from there.

Any questions, please feel free to ask!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back from break! We hope that each of you had an enjoyable, relaxing break. Even though the temperatures aren't showing it, spring will be here in a couple of days. Believe it or not, we're entering the home stretch of the semester. Finals week & graduation will be here before we know it. Here's wishing you a strong finish to the end of the semester.

Thank you for all that you do to make our library a great place!

Is the Business/SPEA library ever quiet?

If you've only ever been in the Business/SPEA Library when it's busy & loud, you may be wondering if it would ever get quiet in the library. Well it does happen...especially right before a before a break. This photo was taken around 10am on the Friday before Spring Break. At that time, there was 1 patron in a study room. Library staff outnumbered patrons 3 to 1. 😉

In all seriousness, our wish is that each of you have an awesome, fun & relaxing break!!

Upcoming Spring Break - What You Need to Know

As the weather gets warmer, we start thinking about Spring Break. While Spring Break itself is still a couple weeks away, here’s some important spring break information relating to the library.

Business/SPEA Library Hours during Spring Break:

Friday March 8th                                             8:00am - 5:00pm
Saturday March 9th - Saturday March 16th    Closed
Sunday March 17th                                         5:00pm - Midnight

Normal hours resume on Monday, March 18th

============================================

What does this mean for library employees?

Monday March 4 to Friday March 8:  The library is open regular hours. You are responsible for working your shifts or finding a sub. Posting sub notices as early as possible is always best. Anyone available to pick up extra shifts during that week, will be greatly appreciated.

Spring Break Week (March 9-16):  The library is closed, so you are NOT required to work.

Sunday March 17th:
Library hours that day are 5:00pm to Midnight. If you work during that time, it would be great if you can make your shift. Otherwise, post a sub notice. If there’s anyone who’d like to help Matt out that evening, so he’s not working alone, it would be greatly appreciated.

Starting Monday March 18:  We’re back to regular hours and business as usual.

For any questions, please see a supervisor.

Have a safe & fun break!!

Some Important Library Telephone Information

In case you haven’t noticed, the phone at the service desk doesn’t ring very loud when someone is trying to call us. We’ve been having trouble hearing when it rings, especially during times when the library is very busy & noisy. As a result, we’ve missed some calls from faculty members.

As we work toward finding a solution, we’re trying something new.

We’ve set it up so when someone calls the main phone number, both that phone & the phone at the reference desk will ring. If you hear the reference desk phone ringing, please check the circulation phone because more than likely there will be a call coming in.

It's important to remember it’s still part of the circulation workers job duties to answer the phone.

Fingers crossed this will help us hear the telephone better & serve our patrons better.

Happy Valentine's Day!

OK, it's the day after so technically, we should have said "Happy Belated Valentine's Day or "Candy on sale today!" Seriously, we hope everyone had a fantastic Wednesday. The bags have been decorated as you can see by the picture above. If you were planning to bring any treats or cards in, please do so by tomorrow. Any time after tomorrow, please feel free to take your bag.

We appreciate all of you and the work you do here at the Business/SPEA Library! 💖

Birthday Wednesday - February

Birthday Wednesday is this Wednesday, February 7th. It's a chance to celebrate our library colleagues who are celebrating birthdays during the month of February. We also do it for the treats. 😉

Be sure to stop by the library in the morning to grab a doughnut and/or stop by later in the afternoon for some cookies.

Those celebrating a February are:

Carly Polk                February 6th

Baby Stonebraker    February ??
